La literatura catalana a les Filipines

La literatura catalana a les Filipines

Abstract

Criticism and historiography on Catalan literature rarely transcend the European context. However the Catalan literature ―as part of the Hispanic literature― participated in the cultural influences exported from Spain to other continents. We study in this paper the Catalan relevance in the formalization of the classical literature of the Philippines through the books of chivalry and Tirant lo Blanch, Valencia and the Philippine metrical romances, and the theater of Moros y Cristianos. In the second part, we describe modern translations of Catalan classics into Filipino, showing the relevance of a Catalan literary relationship in Asia so far ignored.
