Abstract

This paper is part of a research project in field of mathematics education. The goal is to construct a genetic decomposition of the change of basis matrix concept in linear algebra. It is proposed an alternative way for teaching this concept according to the APOS Theory; this is a cognitive theory that describes structures and mechanisms for analyzing how students construct mathematical knowledge. We show evidence from a diagnostic instrument which was applied to undergraduate students of Universidad Industrial de Santander. We analyzed and validated previous concepts that are considered necessary for understanding the change-of-basis matrix concept. We also show some difficulties that were found in students around the understanding of the concept.
