The aim of this research was to know the academic goals of students and check whether they generated performance goals spontaneously or not (Brophy, 2005). The participants were 209 students of the Professional Conservatory of Music of Alicante (Spain). The 55,5% were males and the rest women, with an average age of 17.25 years old. All of them answered an open-ended question. Their answers were submitted to a qualitative analysis. These were the results: 1) when students are asked to describe their goals with their own words, they do not mention performance goals spontaneously, 2) mastery and achievement goals show themselves to be the majority goals in this group of students.
