Abstract

This paper provides a detailed insight into the horror story Rules of the Russian writer Anna Starobinets. Our work takes as its reference the theoretical framework of cognitive linguistics, according to which human language is a psychological product created by human mind. We start from an idea already defended in recent studies: the processes through which the human cognitive system becomes conceptualized as well as the way in which speakers build meaning need to be known so that we can accurately analyze how literary works take shape. Thus, Starobinets´ tale will be examined using concepts drawn from mental space theory and cognitive semantics with the aim of highlighting that the narrative elements which cause terror in the aforesaid tale admit an explanation of a cognitive nature.
