Geología de la provincia de Alicante

Abstract

The Alicante province is included entirely in the Betic Cordillera. Within it the two major domains of this alpine orogen are represented: the Outer Zones to the N, embracing nearly two thirds of its area, and the Inner Zones to the S. Up on both domains several neogene-quaternary intramountainous basins develop, among them the Low Segura Basin is the most outstanding. Among the most singular features of the geological heritage of the Alicante province the following ones point out: littoral morphology, with a cliffy coast in its northern sector and sandy shores, dunes and marshes to the South, a large variety of karstic formations, various outcrops likely related to the desiccation of the Mediterranean and the Messinian salinity crisis, tectonic structures linked to the evolution of this alpine orogen, many of them still working, and diapirs due to the presence of triassic evaporites and clays.
