The dramatic adaptation process experienced by the active population and the labour market has occurred without the aid of any strategic guidelines. Alicante’s industrial production systems have developed strategies that are influenced directly by the market and by the need to survive in the face of globalised competition. Competition has been able to flourish as cuts in production costs have reached the labour force, causing working conditions to become more unstable: lower salaries, irregular hours, seasonal work, non-regulatory contracts, loss of quality in the job, inter-office transfers, regional moves and age or sex discrimination in recruitment. There is still a large secondary job market which acts almost as a structural element, rather than being treated as a crisis-related factor.
