La literatura ecuatoriana contemporánea es desconocida en América Latina y en España. Con el propósito de encontrar una explicación, el artículo analiza un momento de ruptura en la historia cultural de Ecuador en los años sesenta del siglo XX. Los debates y los temas ilustran no sólo lo que en aquel momento se evidenció como los límites de la novela indigenista, por la que la literatura ecuatoriana fue y es conocida, sino la relación entre la narrativa y las características específicas de la sociedad ecuatoriana y su cultura.
Ecuadorian literature is usually unknown in Latin America and Spain. In order to find an explanation for this, the article analyzes a very important breakpoint in the cultural history in Ecuador during the sixties in the XX century. The discussion focus in the issues that at that time were considered as the limits of the indigenous literature. It also describes the relationship between the narrative and the specific characteristics of the Ecuadorian society and its culture.
