This is a survey on the wills and "post mortem" inventories made in Valladolid, 1550-1575. It has let us know the rates of reading and writing among inhabitants of the city: 44.7% of the population, with a 75.8% of men and a 24.2% of women, were capable of writing and 35.9%, with a 70.8% of men and a 29.2%of women, of reading
