Abstract

This paper reviews the treatment of non-verbal communication, specifically paralinguistic and kinesic signs, in SFL textbooks by means of a detailed review of two specific textbooks for foreign language teaching: Nuevo Prisma (editorial Edinumen, 2012-2018) and Método (editorial Anaya, 2012-2021). The analysis takes into account research related to the object of study and basic notions of non-verbal communication, as well as the two official documents in the field of L2/FL: The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (Council of Europe, 2002) and its complementary volume (Council of Europe, 2021), and the Curricular Plan of the Cervantes Institute. Spanish reference levels (Instituto Cervantes, 2006) in terms of their treatment of non-verbal signs. Once these theoretical issues have been verified and studied, the analytical procedures which have allowed the state of the art to be developed are presented. The templates have been created specifically for the analysis of textbooks, including the variables necessary to obtain the relevant information and to establish the state of the art offered in this work: the treatment of paralanguage and kinesics in current SFL textbooks. Finally, taking into consideration the results of this study, future further research to be conducted is presented.
