Abstract

The concept of urban legend is used to describe the fantastic stories that circulate among the population today. Applying the characteristics of this type of fiction we can trace some of them to ancient Rome. One of these examples is the story of Androcles and the Lion, a story that begins to spread during the High Empire, becoming itself a legend to be attributed to authors much earlier, and that still today its text is intended for young people readers. As in the present, its study can help us to know better the mentality of ancient Romans.
