This paper raises several topics of relevance for the understanding of Siervo libre de amor, dealing in the first place with the appropriateness of the narrative model chosen by Juan Rodríguez del Padrón as an effort to adapt the codes of contemporary moral treatises and Cancionero love poetry to the narration of individual experience. Siervo could well be considered as one of the first attempts to shape the model of modem novel that will come to fruition with Cervantes, one and a half century laten The role of Will and individual freedom from Rodríguez del Padrón's Franciscan perspective is also analysed in the paper.
