Abstract

The paper analyzes the verbal material in some romances of the Romacero tradicional. The unique fusion of time levels that has been observed by critics on numerous occasions is a feature that the Romancero shares with the epic. But the romance reconfigures an specific historical rationality, a worldview historically determined that responds to and is developed from values traditionally attributed to the Castilian nobility. The temporality manifested in romance through the use and combination of verbal forms set that specific viewpoint. Its effectiveness lies in the fact that the update as formal procedure –the concrete act of bringing the utterance closer to the act of uttering [enunciación]– affects as well the update of a semiotic process and, therefore, cognitive, proper to this peculiar narrative configuration.
