Abstract

The "Prologus baenensis" which opens the Cancionero of Juan Alfonso de Baena is one of the first and most interesting samples of a poetics written in the Middle Ages. However, the literary meaning of its assertions is elusive. An analysis ofthe concept of "grace", which appears in the Prologus, and reappears in abundant occasions throughout the Cancionero, pennits a theoretical approach to the conception of literature that underlies its pages. Suffused with adivine and courtly aura, the term allows us to set up a bridge between the spiritual character of the poetry and its sensible qualities, in particular those conveyed by the sonority of the meter.
