Abstract

The main purpose of this work is to make an approach to the deontic modality through a series of adverbs ending in -mente that belong to the subcategory of directives. Our objective is to know their evolution and describe the process of change they have experienced, based on the hypothesis that it is a process of grammaticalization through subjectivization. We will also describe their syntactic, semantic and pragmatic characteristics, in order to discover if they have developed discoursive functions. As a consequence of this investigation, we will be able to explain, with a diachronic perspective, the characteristics and function of the adverbs necesariamente, obligatoriamente, irremediablemente, imperiosamente, ineludiblemente and indefectiblemente.
