This article addresses, from a geohistorical perspective, the process of territorial formation of the Spanish-Portuguese land border, with special attention to the conflicts to which it gave rise. The paper is organised into four main sections. In the first one, the origin and evolution of this border up to the end of the Ancien Régime are summarized. The following sections deal with the two main phases in the definition of the current boundary line, corresponding respectively to the 1864 Boundary Treaty and the 1926 Boundary Convention. Finally, a specific section is devoted to the Olivenza issue –a territorial dispute formally frozen since the mid19th century, and which was left out of the aforementioned Boundary Treaties.
