Localización de fuentes de emisiones de contaminantes mediante redes de sensores

Localización de fuentes de emisiones de contaminantes mediante redes de sensores

Abstract

Nowadays, particular attention is being paid to the release of pollutants through several pollution sources. Day after day, the health of any living being is harmed because of the pollution generated by different industrial activities or the burning of fossil fuels, among others. According to the UN, “Pollution in cities contributes to almost 3.4 million of premature deaths around the world and it is a key factor in respiratory and cardiovascular diseases”, which is a matter of concern. This Degree Final Project is aimed at identifying the location of these pollution sources in order to carry out a more efficient control over air pollution. To undertake this task, we must have a sensor network that allows collecting measurements of pollutant concentration in a given context, as well as other interesting parameters, such as wind speed and direction, to process them with a set of iterative algorithms which facilitate the localization of the source. Lacking a real scenario to perform the relevant tests, it was decided to choose a full simulation by means of the so-called Matlab development environment and the aforementioned Gaussian Plume model. Thus, we can obtain the simulated measurements of pollutants which sensors would collect in a real scenario. The algorithms will use these measurements to reproduce the pollutant propagation model and therewith locate the source.
