Abstract

The aim of the work consists in carrying out a detailed study on the mobility of vulnerable road users and their protection. Due to the increase of users of non-motorized two-wheelers in the city, the interest in security protocols and the use of new technologies for possible communication between cyclists and vehicles to prevent accidents has increased in recent years. In order to carry out security applications and systems that enable communication between cyclists and vehicles to avoid collisions, first one needs to understand and study how they move in the city. To this end, in this work we have made a simulation of traffic in an area of the city of Madrid, using SiMTraM which is an extension of SUMO. SiMTraM is a traffic simulator that supports heterogeneous traffic, i.e., the combination of different types of vehicles. Additionally, we have created a program in java to interact with the simulation, to study and analyse the movements of vehicles that are performed in the city. To perform the study we measured distances between vehicles to learn minimum safety distances, and avoid collisions in case of speed changes applied in the simulation. Once we have calculated the distances, and to prevent collisions between vehicles, we obtain speeds of vehicles in the same lane, so that if a vehicle is following another and going faster than it, the later vehicle slows down its speed to avoid a collision. With this we want to see the positive effect of more prudent attitudes from the drivers and, especially, show the utility of simulation tools to study the effect of the introduction of technologies and strategies to protect vulnerable road users.
