This project is born within the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles group from the Robotics Association at University Carlos III de Madrid, always counting with the collaboration of the Systems and Automation Department, which has lent various resources which have aided tremendously in the development of this project. The objective of this work is to develop an aerial platform that allows research in navigation algorithms as well as trajectory generation for indoor-flight quadrotors in a safe manner. The project development and the future research that will be undertaken in this platform will aim to find applications in search and rescue tasks in closed environments. It is for these reasons that this project seeks the design of a compact, sturdy, and low cost quadrotor. The aircraft must additionally allow space to enable the attachment of a wide variety of instruments. To that end, the aerial platform will gather the requirements that allow, in future developments, embarking computer vision systems or other auxiliary systems for the mentioned search and rescue tasks. The project will be undertaken in three different parts. First a quadrotor will be designed, using CAD programs and oriented to fast prototyping and low cost manufacturing techniques. Then, a stability control software will be implemented. This software will be in charge of controlling the position and orientation of the aircraft. Finally, an obstacle avoidance software will be implemented. This software will allow the quadrotor to detect and avoid stationary obstacles.
