Abstract

Nowadays, wireless networks have been taking over from wired ones, becoming the greatest form of communication used today. Whenever the speed demanded by users to communicate is greater, wireless systems need to move very quickly to offer these features to people. Various forms of communication have been established with wireless networks, being MIMO, the system we will focus during the project, one of the newest. A MIMO system puts multiple antennas in both the transmitter side and the receiver, taking advantage of space resources, and allowing the system speed to be increased because the larger number of transmitting and receiving elements signals. More specifically, in this work we will study the massive MIMO systems. The difference between normal MIMO and massive one is that the number of antennas being used is going to be bigger in massive one. While in normal MIMO is about 10 antennas, in massive MIMO it could be even 100. In order to analyse the characteristics of massive MIMO system and check if its use in real life is feasible, the idea for this project was born. This study presented below is based on determining the channel capacity of a massive MIMO system by placing 3 different filters in the transmitter side. Since the study will examine both the uplink channel (which runs from the user terminal to the base station) and downlink (just the opposite), the transmitter side will change from one side to the other, being in the first case the user terminal and the BTS in the second one. However, the study will be always done in the user terminal side. Throughout the project, we will explain how this affects to the results. The feature that will be studied in the project is the channel capacity. The formulas and the characteristics of the matrix which defines it will be detailed later.
