Iconoclastic Council and John of Damascus

Abstract

Between 7th and 9th centuries, the connection between East and West Churches has reduced because of the problems which were lived in the Christian World and important subjects which were collided by eastern church and emperors have came out. The most important of these was dispute of depicted cult which emerged from Leon 3rd and his followers’ iconoclast (depiction and idol hostility) politics. The icon discussions which will go on during one century has started with the first edict of Leon 3rd in 726 that accepts worship to depiction and paganism same. The movement which was begun by refusing worship to holy pictures in churches has reached to be shrededand thrown of them from churches. Theological evidences aganist depicted refraction which has political, religious and deep sociological effects were prepared and supported by a bunch of monks under the leadership of John of Damascus. But in the iconoclastic council organized in754 in İstanbul, Anti-İconoclats and espicially their brave spokesman John of Damascus were excommunicate. Later on adaption of description supporters’ ideas in council gathered in Nicea in787 shows the influence and importance of John of Damascus in christiandom. According to opinions put forward about the reasons of starting iconoclastic that is the great moot point of that period, it is like the Emperor was influenced by faith and culture of İslam or Judasim, or like this contention arised from struggle between East and West
