The Read Shell Midden, 15Btl0, located in the Western Coal Fields of Kentucky is an Archaic seasonal camp and mortuary site. Btl0 was completely excavated from 1937 to 1939 under the auspices of the Works Projects Administration (WPA) and over 240 burials were identified at the site. Due to poor preservation, only 152 burials were removed from the midden. A complete inventory and macroscopic analysis was conducted on the collection. A forensic, or case by case, approach according to various published standards was applied for age and sex estimates. The results of this study are compared to the Bt5 research by Mensforth (1986, 1990) in which he employed a populational approach for age estimates. Comparisons are made to Chiggerville, Ohl, and Indian Knoll, Oh2. Finally, a test of the auricular surface aging technique is detailed and various methods including seriation, blind test, and forensic assessments are discussed.
