Abstract

The opinion that research is not a legitimate activity for nurses has support in and outside the profession. It has been argued that nursing is a simple art that is not enhanced by science, and that research hinders rather than facilitates the provision of quality nursing services. This paper will examine these arguments and relate them to current controversies in nursing theory, education, research and practice.
