It is important to analyze demographic issues as they appear in the economy from a theoretical point of view. Even before Adam Smith (1776), those who may be called pre-economists have tried to define the place of the population and its possible interference with the conditions of production, distribution and consumption. Then the "population principle" of Malthus is of considerable importance since practically all later authors will have to be more or less defined in relation to this principle. Mathematical tools are becoming increasingly important as of the 20th century, but the major demo-economic themes previously studied continue to inform population analysis.
