Abstract

Le non-conformisme protestant, réaction des classes populaires contre les structures hiérarchiques des Églises établies d'Angleterre et d'Écosse, a été introduit à Montréal par les immigrants. L'examen des registres paroissiaux de sept Églises non-conformistes révèle des divergences dans leur composition sociale. Si, dans toutes, l'élément populaire était dominant, la participation des marchands et des professions libérales, qui variait de l'une à l'autre, créaient entre elles des distinctions importantes. L'analyse des archives des Églises presbytérienne Erskine et congrégationaliste de Zion révèle que ces différences influençaient les préoccupations de chaque congrégation de même que sa manière de définir et d'imposer son code moral. Les méthodes allaient du respect de l'indépendance et de la liberté de choix dans le cas de l'Église Erskine, dominée par les artisans, à l'examen minutieux de la moralité de chacun dans le cas de l'Église de Zion, davantage polarisée socialement.
