Abstract

La fiction se distinguerait du mensonge ou de la supercherie en étant une « feintise partagée » (Schaeffer) entre l’auteur et le lecteur, partenaires coopérants liés par un pacte de lecture où chacun respecte les règles du jeu. Pourtant, certaines fictions remettent en cause ce rapport de connivence en refusant de partager avec le lecteur le lieu ou la nature précis de la feintise qui serait dès lors non pas partagée mais plutôt dissimulée, et de ce fait non pas ludique mais sérieuse. La fiction moderne a largement exploité la figure du narrateur peu fiable comme source des erreurs, voire des mensonges desquels le lecteur tombe victime. Or, que conclure quand ce narrateur, bouc émissaire de l’auteur, n’existe pas? Nous explorerons un corpus de romans québécois où la fiction apparente est un leurre derrière lequel se dissimule le véritable lieu de la feintise, piégeant le lecteur dans des paradoxes sans issue. Ces pactes de lecture rompus ne peuvent pas être mis sur le compte d’un narrateur bouc émissaire mais plutôt sur celui de l’auteur réel — rusé, tricheur — qui s’impose comme autorité finale, tireur des ficelles non seulement du récit, mais de son lecteur.
