La tesis se centra en la cobertura del famoso periódico británico The Times del sitio de Oporto en Portugal (1832-1833) y de la Primera Guerra Carlista (1833-1840) en la vecina España y su apoyo público y manifiesto a la causa liberal en ambos conflictos ibéricos. El estudio trata de poner en contexto histórico la cobertura de los dos conflictos en las páginas de The Times y se complementa con un estudio acerca de los orígenes y la evolución del periódico The Times de Londres desde sus principios en 1785 hasta mediados del siglo XIX. La investigación incorpora un estudio en profundidad de una selección de noticias que aparecen en las ediciones diarias de The Times relacionadas específicamente con el sitio de la ciudad portuguesa de Oporto por parte de las fuerzas de Dom Miguel, rey de Portugal, durante los catorce meses de duración del conflicto bélico. La tesis resalta la sorprendente influencia política y diplomática que The Times ha ejercido sobre la historia de Portugal y España durante el siglo XIX y su importante legado histórico en la formación de la Portugal y España contemporáneas.
This thesis is centred on the coverage of the famous British newspaper The Times of the Siege of Oporto in Portugal (1832-1833) and of the First Carlist War (1833-1840) in neighbouring Spain and its manifest public support for the liberal cause in both Iberian conflicts. The study tries to put into historical context the coverage of both conflicts in the daily pages of The Times and is complemented by a study of the origins and evolution of The Times of London newspaper from its beginnings in 1785 until the middle of the 19th century. The investigation includes a in depth study of a selection of news entries which appear in the daily editions of The Times specifically related with the Siege of the Portuguese city of Oporto by the forces of Dom Miguel, king of Portugal, during the fourteen months of the conflict.
