Abstract

Der Text analysiert Ligetis Etüden Nr. 1 und Nr. 13 sowie den 4. Satz der Sonate für Viola solo und geht dabei der Frage nach, inwiefern man deren Formdisposition unter den Begriffen des Raumes und des Prozesses interpretieren kann. Ausgehend von Ligetis eigenen Zuschreibungen wird zu zeigen versucht, dass der kompositorische Ausgangspunkt stets in der Entgegensetzung von unterschiedlichen rhythmisch-metrischen und quasi tonalen Mustern liegt. Die Überlagerung dieser kontrastierenden Muster führt jedoch schon bald zu einer Phase der Instabilität, die jeweils das Stück zuletzt gewissermaßen aus den Fugen geraten lässt, sodass nur ein Eingriff, der jenseits der Ausgangsbedingungen liegt, das Stück zu einem Ende führen kann. Da das Material im Grunde unangetastet bleibt und vor allem die Relationalität zwischen den Komponenten verändert wird, entsteht auf diese Weise eine Mischung aus variativ räumlichen und prozesshaft zielgerichteten Momenten. Musical Form between Space and Process: On Strategies of Formal Composition in Some of György Ligeti’s Late Instrumental WorksThe text analyses Ligeti’s Études No. 1 and No. 13 as well as the 4th movement of the Sonata for Viola Solo and explores to what extent their formal dispositions can be interpreted in terms of space and process. Based on Ligeti’s own remarks, an attempt is made to show that the compositional starting point always lies in the opposition of different rhythmic-metrical and quasi-tonal patterns. However, the superposition of these contrasting patterns quickly leads to a phase of instability, which ultimately causes the piece to be thrown out of joint, as it were, so that only an intervention beyond the organising principles defined at the outset can bring the piece to an end. Since the material basically remains untouched and rather the relationality between the components is changed, a mixture of variably spatial and processually teleological moments is created in this way.
