This study aims to explore the role of tarekat in the Islamization of Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, through a conceptual and historical analysis. The background stresses that many Muslims still misunderstand tarekat, perceiving it only as mystical ritual, while its function in character‑building, moral discipline, and spiritual education is substantial. The research objective is to clarify the definition, objectives, structural elements, varieties, and historical development of tarekat within the framework of syariah‑tasawuf‑makrifat. Using a qualitative‑descriptive library research design, the study draws on scientific literature published between 2014 and 2026, including journal articles, theses, and books discussing tarekat and tasawuf. The population comprises all relevant scholarly works, while the sample consists of purposively selected texts on the meaning, objectives, components, and history of tarekat, especially those present in Indonesia. The main instrument is a conceptual framework for document analysis, and data were analyzed through reduction, categorization, and synthesis according to qualitative procedures. The results show that tarekat functions not only as a spiritual path but also as a structured spiritual‑education institution that shapes akhlak, social discipline, and spiritual awareness. The conclusion affirms that understanding tarekat through a systematic, academically grounded, and historically contextualized approach can reduce stigma and strengthen its legitimacy as part of mainstream Islamic scholarship.
