El anti-iberismo de los republicanos radicales portugueses (1870-1910)

Abstract

En este articulo se lleva a cabo una valoración de los diversos proyectos que el federalismo portugués elaboró para frenar el proyecto anexionista que conllevaba la propuesta iberista de mediados del siglo xix. Los republicanos portugueses diseñaron diversos proyectos de federación y confederación que partían del supuesto de la defensa de los derechos individuales y de la armonización de las diversas instancias sociales y territoriales que constituían tanto España como Portugal. Ello representaba el reconocimiento de que ambas naciones estaban constituidas por unidades orgánicas (regiones y estados) desde las que construir un proyecto federativo, base, a su vez, de una federación latina y, en su proyección, europea e internacional. De este modo, el federalismo portugués, asumiendo los planteamientos de la filosofía comtiana, aspiraba a construir un nuevo orden internacional, pacífico, y respetuoso de los derechos de los pueblos. Una propuesta que se presentaba como abiertamente antagónica de aquella iberista que, a los ojos del federalismo portugués, representaba la absorción de Portugal por su vecina España.
