Abstract

En la construcción del Estado-liberal español, el episodio histórico de las Comunidades fue utilizado por liberales y progresistas para justificar dicho proyecto y reivindicar, al mismo tiempo, su correspondiente modelo. Lo que ocurrió en Villalar aportó argumentos históricos para reivindicar la lucha por las libertades y avanzar en un modelo liberal que implicaba, ineludiblemente, la unidad nacional y la defensa a ultranza de la monarquía. Esto último exigió de liberales y progresistas, no así de republicanos y demócratas, una estrategia argumental que, sirviéndose del episodio histórico de las Comunidades, hiciese compatible el modelo liberal con la institución monárquica.
