
During May, October and November 2001 excavations were conducted in eastern Kefar Sava and in en-Nabi Yamin, after ancient remains were discovered during work carried out by the Electric and Mekorot Companies. Five areas were excavated (Fig. 1): two in the Giv'at Eshkol neighborhood in eastern Kefar Sava, on the fringes of ancient Kafr Saba (Area A: Permit No. A-3425*; map ref. NIG 19455-6/67645; OIG 14455-6/17645; Area B: Permit No. A-3503*; map ref. 19452-6/67632-3; OIG 14452-6/17632-3; see E. Ayalon, 'Atiqot 34:107-120), and three around en-Nabi Yamin (Tomb of Benjamin; HA 78-79:41), next to NeweYamin Junction, c. 600 m east of ancient Kafr Saba, on the fringes of a site where a road station stood at the intersection of the Via Maris and a lateral route, leading from Shechem to Kafr Saba and onward to the port city of Appollonia (Area C: Permit No. A-3513*; map ref. 19508-15/67614-24; OIG 14508-15/17614-24; Areas D-E: Permit No. A-3513*; map ref. 19449-70/67613-7; OIG 14449-70/17613-7). The excavations, on behalf of the Antiquities Authority and financed by the Electric (Areas A-D) and Mekorot (Area E) Companies, were directed by G. Birman, with the assistance of S.
