Aunque Berkeley sea un filósofo poco citado por Zubiri, sin embargo, mantuvo con él un diálogo crítico profundo no en cuestiones secundarias, sino en dos centrales de su filosofía: la sustantividad y la intelección. En lo que a la primera hace, el encuentro con el empirismo en general y con Berkeley en particular le sirvió para perfilar su unidad y sistematicidad. En cuanto a la intelección, fue decisivo este diálogo para ver qué sea la impresión y la actualidad. Si la filosofía de Berkeley es un idealismo empírico, la de Zubiri, en cierto modo, podría considerarse un realismo empírico.
