Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the chaining of clauses in Pima Bajo - the Yuto-Nahua or Yuto-Aztecan language of northwestern Mexico -, especially adverbial and coordinated clauses. The analysis accounts for a set of mechanisms that encode discursive coherence, namely, referential, temporal and spatial continuity. The analysis allows to show, on the one hand, that referential continuity is encoded through pronouns, anaphora zero and identical subject markers, and on the other, that temporal continuity is manifested through tempo-spectual and connective suffixes that encode various temporal connections, among them: precedence, subsequence, simultaneity, point of coincidence, terminal, initial or intermediate limit
