IN THE NOVEMBER 1955 issue of the ARITHMETIC TEACHER there appeared and article entitled The Abacus as an Arithmetic Teaching Device. It dealt mainly with computation. This article does not compete with it for this has to do with the abacus (we call it a Ten-Tens Counting Frame) not as an instrument for computation but as a means of developing an understanding of our number system.
