Emotional Exhaustion Among School Administrators.

Abstract

The purpose of the researcher was to investigate burnout in school administrators. The independent variables were: 1. Gender, two levels: (1) male and (2) female; 2. Years in present position, four levels: (1) 5 or less, (2) 6 to 10, (3) 11 to 15, and (4) 16 or more; 3. Present position, three levels: (1) elementary principal (K-5), (2) middle/junior high principal (6 - 8), and (3) senior high principal (9- 12); and 4. School enrollment size, three levels: (1) 110 or 165 (class 3A), (2) 167-389 (class 4A), and (3) 390-731 (class 5A). The dependent variables were: (1) emotional exhaustion scores, (2) depersonalization scores, and (3) personal accomplishment scores. This study surveyed 132 principals in Kansas - 44 elementary school principals, 44 middle/junior high principals, and 44 senior high principals. A total sample of 104 out of 132, or approximately 79%, of school principals responded to the MBI Form Ed. Each of the four null hypotheses was tested using a three- way analysis of variance. A total of 42 comparisons, excluding 42 recurring comparisons, were tested. Six of the 42 comparisons were statistically significant at the .05 level. Three of the 6 significant comparisons were for the main effect present position and the dependent variable personal accomplishment; gender and the dependent variable personal accomplishment; and gender and the dependent variable depersonalization. Elementary school principals scored higher than middle/junior and senior high school principals on the personal accomplishment subscale. Female principals scored higher than male principals on the personal accomplishment subscale. Male principals scored higher than female principals on the depersonalization subscale. The results of the present study appeared to support the following generalizations: 1. an association among gender, years in present position, present position, and depersonalization, 2. an association among gender, present position, and emotional exhaustion, and 3. an association among years in present position, present position, and emotional exhaustion.
