Abstract

Le Tratado de las ocho questiones del templo (1552) de Juan de Vergara est considéré comme l’ouvrage fondateur de la critique historique en Espagne. Si l’on s’intéresse à la genèse de ce texte et aux traces qu’il en conserve, on perçoit que Vergara l’a sans doute conçu avec davantage d’ambition. Fruit de l’intimité avec le duc de l’Infantado, Vergara donne une véritable leçon d’humanisme dans cet échange épistolaire dont il fait un traité. Au delà des mises en garde contre une érudition stérile, au delà des consignes qui encadrent la pratique de la philologie, le traité dévoile, dans l’intimité de sa mise en texte et de sa mise en livre, le dessein de son auteur. Dans la totalité de sa réponse à la lettre du duc de l’Infantado, Juan de Vergara indique à cet homme comment acquérir et conserver une dignité en accord avec son état. Ce faisant, il ouvre l’humanisme philologique et les pratiques sur lesquelles il repose à la question de l’harmonie du corps politique.
