Sagrado, do latim “sacer”, significa etimologicamente aquilo que é consagrado aos deuses, opondo-se ao profano, e cujo contacto deve ser evitado. A condição de sagrado envolve, assim, um sentido de transcendência e de interdição que é transversal a todo o fenómeno religioso e implica uma inevitável separação entre o sagrado e o profano, ou o divino e o humano. Porém, o termo “sacer” tem também um caráter ambíguo que, simultaneamente, suscita a veneração e o horror, pelo que a interdição assume uma função protetora, quer em relação ao sagrado, evitando-lhe a profanação, quer em relação ao homem, defendendo-o das consequências terríficas de um contato indevido com uma força sobrenatural.
