Evaluation of Botanical Products against Some Major Insect Pests of Sugarcane

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of five botanical products viz., neem cake, nimbicidine (patent), neem leaf powder, Bishkatali (Polygonum hydropiper) plant powder and tobacco plant powder against some major pests of sugarcane in three locations during the cropping season from November 2002 to December 2003. Results revealed that all botanical products reduced larval (white grub) population and infestation caused by top shoot borers, stem borer and rootstock borers. Nimbicidine at 2.5 and 2.0 litre/haapplied in March, April and August 2003 gave the highest efficacy of 40.92 per cent and 31.61 per cent over control to suppress top shoot borer and stem borer infesation respectively. Tobacco plant powder at 100 kg/ha applied in March, April and August showed the highest efficacy of 40.49 per cent to contol rootstock borer infestation and also a reduction of 78.36 per cent larval population of white grub.
