Abstract

Department of Construction Management and Economics The paper Professionalism of the built environment researcher discusses different aspects of professionalism among researchers on the built environment (how important it is, what form does it take, who should develop it, who will be its gatekeeper and who will undertake its assessment) suggesting greater attention should be paid to this important issue. Another topic originating from this department is BIM implementation in building maintenance were authors analyse the benefits of BIM implementation, as well as its limitations and, finally, propose a strategy for a more efficient building maintenance management. Department of Engineering Mechanics The paper European Seismic Risk Model 2020: Focus on Croatia summarises development of the European seismic risk model introducing the extension of seismic risk to 46 countries within Europe, describes the use of a fully probabilistic methodology, while also placing emphasis on the consideration of socio-economic aspects, and the involvement of the local scientific community in the development of the models. The paper Seismic risk reduction in Croatia: mitigating the challenges and grasping the opportunities discusses the current state of knowledge and practice related to seismic risk assessment and abatement activities in the Croatia, and gives suggestions on how to effectively overcome challenges and seize the opportunities to increase community resilience. Department of Geotechnics The paper Trends in Non-destructive testing of rock bolts provides an overview of currently available methods, and methods that are now under development, to quantify the condition of rock bolts as critical elements for many rock mass stabilization, tunnel construction, and underground work projects. Department of Hydroscience and Engineering The paper Short term and seasonal forecast of hydro-power production by means of hydro-meteorological predictions reveals that, by employing COntinuous SEmidistributed RunOff model, some incremental benefits could be gained for seasonal runoff predictions, and thus for expected improvements in hydropower production. The paper Latest developments in sustainable water management presents an overview of new and upcoming approaches in various aspects and areas of water management, including several new water treatment technologies with a largescale application potential, outlining the use of numerical modelling in water treatment, ‘green’ infrastructure, and coastal engineering planning and design. Department of Materials The paper Research in cement and concrete over 40 years: experiences and lessons for the future presents several focus areas such are: durability in reinforced concrete, (RC) structures, corrosion in cracked and uncracked RC beams, heat and temperature development in large concrete masses, and biogenic acid attack on concrete sewers, with an emphasis on industrial applications and inherent research lessons. The paper Alternative binders for concrete: opportunities and challenges provides an overview of the current state of the art in the field of alternative binders for concrete, and points to the opportunities and challenges for their more systematic application in engineering practice, in line with the basic requirement for construction works - sustainable use of natural resources. Department of Structural Engineering The Pelješac Bridge, where the construction work started in 2018, is the largest bridge under construction in Croatia. The paper Pelješac bridge – design and maintenance discusses history of development of this large project, describes the final solution involving a multi-span extradosed semi-integral bridge with steel deck, and outlines plans for bridge maintenance. The paper Reliability differentiation and uniform risk in standards: a critical review and a practical appraisal critically discusses the reliability differentiation principle in modern standards aiming to achieve uniform risk levels for the various classes of structures. According to the authors, practical rules are needed for the classification of structures based on consequences of failure, with implementation in design. The related proposals are also presented. Department of Transportation Engineering The paper Future Trends in Transport Infrastructures Monitoring presents future trends in pavement engineering focussing specifically on the non-destructive continuous monitoring, data processing, and possible applications of Building Information Modelling, as improved tools for pavement monitoring and rehabilitation management. The research presented in the paper Design of new generation of switches and crossings aims to find reliable and robust designs for switches and crossings as essential elements of railway lines, with low life-cycle costs, low carbon footprint, and low maintenance. Department of Mathematics The final paper Grassmann algebra and graphic statics, originating from the Department of Mathematics, presents the advantage of Grassmann algebra when translating basic geometric operations (meet and join) of incidence geometry into algebraic expressions, which can easily be translated into a programme code. Some examples are also given.
