El principio fundamental de la DDE lo constituye el hecho de que la relación que se da entre las causas y los efectos del acto humano es la plataforma para distinguir los efectos diferenciados en grupos de dos en una relación de exclusión lógica. Esta división fundamental de los efectos del acto, considera a algunos como hechos controlables, (especialmente los inmediatos —porque la mente los identifica con facilidad—). Otros efectos en cambio, incluso cuando se lleguen a identificar, no se pueden controlar, aún cuando se elija no pretenderlos.
