Abstract

En gran parte de su obra, James Coleman sigue la tradición weberiana para afirmar que la sociología contemporánea debe ante todo interesarse por el hecho de que vivimos en una sociedad organizacional en que los comportamientos están fuertemente regulados normativamente y racionalizados y en que las interdependencias entre actores son objeto de una gestión formal omnipresente y sofisticada. Para construir esta sociología, Coleman procede a la ampliación de la teoría de la elección racional. El artículo sugiere que esta ampliación es insuficiente para dar cuenta del funcionamiento de una sociedad organizacional. Se propone una ampliación alternativa neo-estructural. En esta perspectiva, los actores son racionales en tanto que contextualizan sus acciones mediante juicios de pertinencia, juicios mediante los cuales politizan sus intercambios y la gestión de sus interdependencias. Esta politización incluye tanto las tentativas más miopes como las más pacientes para modificar en su propio favor las estructuras de oportunidades y restricciones, en particular mediante la creación de nichos sociales y gracias a la competición por el estatus. Esta concepción del actor conduce a una comprensión más profunda de la disciplina social subyacente al intercambio social y a la acción colectiva. A su vez, esta disciplina hace posibles los procesos sociales que estructuran toda forma de organización económica y social, tal como las solidaridades particularistas, el control social y la regulación. Esta aproximación neo-estructural obliga también al sociólogo a interesarse de forma específica a nivel meso-social, un nivel poco explorado por la sociología de Coleman y por sus formalismos, pero cuyo conocimiento es necesario para comprender mejor la responsabilidad en la sociedad organizacional.
