Abstract

O Brasil possui o maior rebanho bovino comercial do mundo. Brazil has the largest commercial cattle herd in the world. In the country, livestock is divided into two fronts: on the one hand there is the production of animals for the supply of domestic and international meat (beef cattle), on the other hand there is creation and sale of cattle with pedigree (elite cattle). These two fronts are always on relation, but organized diferent forms of trade and production. While the first bet on the "genetics" to produce animal meat tender and soft that can be slaughtered in a less and less time, the second is a bet on "genealogy" in the vicissitudes of the pedigree for produce rares animals, whose prices can reach the figure of more than one million dollars. Veterinarians and scientists say that "genetic bulls" are "technical" and "genealogy bulls" are "magic." From conversations with these actors and field observations to a central artificial insemination of cattle, this paper aims discuss how the categories "genetic" and "genealogy" have been designed and built by agents of the Brazilian agribusiness and propose a debate on the scope of anthropology to illuminate the relations between science and market.
