Abstract

A principios de 2009 se presentó, a bombo y platillo, el Kindle2, el dispositivo que Amazon solo vende por el momento a unos pocos privilegiados y que representa la última generación de los llamados eBooks, el iPod de libros que en la competencia Sony ha bautizado como eReader. Por cierto: ¿cómo podríamos llamarlo por estas partes hispánicas nuestras? Adaptar mal el término inglés como ibuk o algo similar sería demasiado. La expresión "libro electrónico" es bastante descriptiva del artilugio y también sirve para designar cualquier texto literario presentado en formato digital como ocurrió en el año 2000 -por cierto, con poco éxito- con la novela Riding Bullet de Stephen King, y esperamos que finalmente prevalezca como "e-mail" también lo hizo para el correo electrónico, aunque no por ello deja de ser demasiado largo, y las lenguas tienden universalmente a la economía. Pero se trata de designar, en definitiva, un nuevo medio de almacenamiento, transporte y lectura de esos escritos más o menos extensos que conocemos como libros. La magnífica operación de marketing que Jeff Bezos desató en la Morgan Library de Nueva York cuando presentó su nueva librería ya ha hecho correr ríos de tinta por el ancho mundo y ha revivido el viejo tema de la muerte inminente del libro al que algunos agoreros pusieron una fecha exacta hace apenas unos meses en la Feria de Frankfurt: Año 2018
