ESTEREOTIPOS RACIALES QUE PERDURAN: CIENCIA, DIVULGACIÓN Y DISONANCIA COGNITIVA

Abstract

This oral communication presents, in a tentative way, an analysis of the persistence of race discourse and racial stereotypes in sport. Despite the lack of credibility of the concept of “race” due to scientific advances in genetics, the discourse of race is accepted as part of commonsensical assumptions on the categorization of human populations and the relationship between populations and sport performance (based upon the white/black polarity). One of the main hypothesis about the persistence of race discourse is that is based upon the phenomenon of cognitive dissonance between scientific studies and the interpretations from ordinary media that transmit a stereotypical opinion to the public. We exemplify such phenomenon through the analysis of specific articles from Runner’s World, one of the most relevant magazines for runners.
