The first part of the paper gives a survey of submanifold theory of almost Hermitian manifolds. The results of the paper provide a better understanding of generic submanifolds of complex space forms. A necessary and sufficient condition for the integrability of a totally real distribution is given. The author obtains several expressions for Ricci tensor, scalar curvature and studies the existence of totally umbilical generic submanifolds.
