In this developmental paper, I am interested in processes of subjectivation of junior researchers in the dynamic context of Austrian universities. I especially focus on how junior academics deal with the requirements of the managerial university and how they appropriate and adopt identity regulation, drawing on a discourse analysis of 20 qualitative interviews. Furthermore, the paper discusses the potential for micro-emancipation that is embedded in the constitution of the 'academic subject'.
