A survey of the law concerning marine protected areas in Greece, and the actions which have been taken pursuant to those laws. The international conventions on environmental protection areas: the Ramsar Convention, the Cultural and Natural Heritage Convention, the Bern Convention, UNCLOS, the Biodiversity Convention, the Bonn Convention, the Barcelona Convention, the Adriatic Sea Declaration and the Ionian Sea Agreement. Domestic legislation on protected areas: Law 360/1976; Law 1650/1986 setting out the categories of protected area, the method of establishing such areas and the restrictions and limitations which apply to them. Specific areas subject to the special regimes: the Marine Park of Alonissos-Northern Sporades, the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, and areas protected by virtue of emergency measures. The limited protection available at international law for underwater heritage: UNCLOS and the Greek law of 1932. The Inspectorate for Underwater Antiquities; marine archaeological areas.
