THE ROMAN FUNERARY MEDALLIONS IN DACIA POROLISSENSIS

Abstract

The article attempts to carry out an analysis regarding the use and spread of this type of funerary monument on the territory of the province of Dacia Porolissensis. The number of discoveries is not large, and the vast majority of the monuments is fragmentarily preserved. In the current context of the level of research, it is noted that this type of funerary monument appears in the necropolises of the military centers of Potaissa and Porolissum, but also at the auxiliary forts Gilău, Gherla, Arcobara/Ilișua, Romita, Tihău. From a stylistic point of view, they are varied both in terms of quality and iconography, from carefully carved pieces to some modest achievements, from the representation of a single character to the busts of eight characters. Typologically they belong to a single type – free-standing medallions; this model of North-Italic influence penetrated Dacia Porolissensis through the Noric-Pannonian branch.
