TIPOS DE GENERICIDADE COMO TIPOS DE MODALIDADE

Abstract

Abstract This paper addresses the different restrictions on the use of two types of Brazilian Portuguese generically quantified sentences: indefinite singular subject sentences (IS-sentences - Um número par é divisível por 2) and bare numberless subject sentences (BN - sentences - Número par é divisível por 2). Both IS and BN sentences have been interpreted as synonymous in the current literature. Nevertheless, IS-sentences have a more analytic flavor as compared to the more descriptive flavor of BN-sentences. This paper follows Greenberg’s (2002) for English and claims that the differences should be attributed to the expression of different kinds of modality. The expression of different modalities is achieved through generic quantification over the different denotations of IS and NN subjects.
