Mangrove forests are extremely important coastal resources, which are vital to our socio-economic development. Much of the ecological service of mangroves lies in protecting the coast from solar UV-B radiation, “green house” effects, and fury of cyclones, floods, sea level rise, wave action and coastal erosion. Mangroves contribute significantly to the global carbon cycle and produce large amounts of litter in the form of falling leaves, branches and other debris. Besides, mangrove habitats contribute to complex food webs and energy transfers.
